Fiji Hardwood Hosts Key Consultation in Vanua Levu to Discuss Upcoming Mahogany Harvesting Operations
Fiji Hardwood recently facilitated an important consultation in Labasa, on the 29th of August, bringing together trustees from six forest-based mahogany plantations in Vanua Levu. The gathering included key stakeholders from the Ministry of Forestry, Fiji Mahogany Trust, Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited (FHCL), and the iTaukei Land Trust Board (iTLTB).
This timely consultation was a vital part of FHCL’s ongoing commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement, particularly as the company prepares to commence harvesting operations in the region.

The meeting provided landowners with an invaluable opportunity to address their questions and concerns directly with the relevant authorities, ensuring that the process moves forward with strong collaboration and mutual benefit.
Divisional Commissioner Northern, Uraia Rainima, opened the consultation by highlighting the significance of the event in empowering landowners and promoting sustainable development in their communities. He acknowledged the patience of the landowners in Vanua Levu, who have waited decades for the moment when the mahogany trees they planted would be ready for harvest.
Rainima also emphasized the alignment of these efforts with the Government’s National Development Plan, particularly in eradicating poverty and fostering economic growth. He reiterated the government’s support for landowners, including the issuance of free licenses to harvest native or pine timber for building purposes.
FHCL Chairman Iowane Naiveli also addressed the forum, reminding landowners of the blessings they possess in their lands, which he referred to as “God’s given money.” He stressed the importance of good planning and governance to ensure continued revenue growth through this partnership.
The consultation saw active participation from trustees representing the forest-based mahogany plantations in Navonu, Saqani, Seaqaqa, Dreketi, Korotari, and Wainunu, setting the stage for a successful and collaborative harvesting season.
